The Greatest Gift One Can Give Is Knowledge

The month of December, is always a special month for everyone around the world. With holidays such as Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa to celebrate, there is reason for much joy. This Christmas was once again a joyous event and I am truly blessed for what I received for Christmas. One of the gifts that stood out to me was from my parents, who gave my siblings and I the gift of knowledge.

A Book!? You've Got To Be Kidding Me

Five years ago being gave a book for Christmas I would have politely said thank you, but in the back of my mind I would be highly upset. A book!? I would have said, where's my new video game or something cool that I will play over and over again until I get bored of it.

As I have gotten older and have continued to expanded my mind, I sat in my spot on the couch and listened to my parents explain why they had given us the book, Secrets of the Millionaire Mind by T. Harv Eker. Among the many reasons they mentioned the one that stood out the most was that my parents did not want my brother, sister and I to have to go through the same struggles and pitfalls as they had. This book was to be a stepping stone on teaching us how to reshape our minds, learn how to make our money work for us as well as learn life principles to live by. I could not help but begin to smile deep down inside.

Growing Up

As I sat there and reflected on the past five to ten years, I begin to realize what they had been looking to accomplish. By restricting our video game and TV time to only Friday and Saturday, they were teaching us to find other means to entertain ourselves and stimulate our minds. Through this, I slowly took to reading books. I remember in 10th grade at the age of 14 my dad was making me read, How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. I did not realize at the time but my parents were slowly beginning to help shape my mindset. I would have summer readings assigned to me by my parents and my grandparents and I hated it! The books would range from African American history to religious readings to life principle books. The more I read the more I begin to learn and actually like what I was reading.

My vocabulary begin to grow and I would find myself using words in conversations that I don't recall ever actually learning but remembering I had read it somewhere. I was able to maintain intellectual conversations with people who had more experience then myself. I found myself interested in reading what was happening in and around the world and rapidly fell in love with technology. The best part is older people began to take me more seriously because of the manner in which I carried yourself. I can recall just a month or two ago I was visiting my lawyer and he asked me to come bowling with he and his colleagues. He said they would be some young professionals such as myself there around 25-27 years old. I looked at him and said, I'd love to come and by the way I'm only 21. Not to mention, this was our third time meeting face to face, needless to say he was shocked.

By reading these books will I automatically become wealthy or successful? No, not by any means, however, do I believe that I have the ability and tools necessary to become wealthy and successful, by all means.

Looking At How The Rich Teach Their Kids

Take a second to think how generational wealth has continued to flow in many wealthy families. The same principles that John Rockefeller, Malcolm Forbes, Samuel Moore Walton and Conrad Hilton used to make their mark in the world are the same principles they've passed on to their children.

We can look at Conrad Hilton. His granddaughter, the infamous Paris Hilton may not have the best reputation, however, if you plot her journey to becoming an international household name you will see exactly how she used wealth principles. She used her public image as well as her "Hilton" name to build her own empire which encompasses reality tv shows, clothing lines, dog lines and perfume lines to name a few. It is not a coincident that she capitalized off of how the public perceived her as well as utilizing her existing fame. One may argue that she already had money so this example is null and void; but if you can tell me that you knew who Paris Hilton was before 2000 and that she was recognizable to the general public around the world, you would be lying to yourself.

My point is, that it is our responsibility as parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, whomever, to begin to lay the foundation for our children to be better off then the previous generation. Future generations will not have the luxury of working for the same company for 30 years and retiring. There will be no Social Security, there will be no retiring at 65. A job is not guaranteed for us and the income gap is only getting wider. We must begin to show these children, teens and young adults that the money, time and energy they put into doing something once today can multiple 10x over the next five, ten, twenty years.

Starting Off 2013 Right

I challenge us all to put down the new Shades of Grey book or to not spend $11 dollars to watch a two hour movie or forego partying at the club for a weekend and instead spend a weekend taking a look at yourself. Ask yourself what it is you want to accomplish in the next five years, what dreams do you have stored in your head, written down in a book or posted on your fridge. What is it that you've always wanted to do but have been too scared to do it. If you have a family, what legacy do you want to leave for your children. And tell yourself you will do it! This is not a new years resolution but simply a new year to resolute yourself. The moment we stop going after our dreams is the moment we stop living.

So go ahead and pick up a book that will stimulate your mind, whether it's about wealth principles or how to maximize your time and energy. I may be young but I am a firm believer that it's never too late to make your dream become a reality, it's all a matter of taking the first step. Let's start 2013 off with a bang and learn to dream again by sharing the gift of knowledge!

Let's connect and challenge ourselves to read one book a month that you believe can greatly impact your life and can be passed on to make a difference in the lives of another.

Why Is Success Defined By The Color Of Your Skin

What You Say I Am

I wanted to take a moment to address something that I constantly hear said to me or about me and that is the theory that in order to be "black" you must act a certain way, talk a certain way and walk a certain or else you are not considered black. I've been hearing these remarks since 6th grade when I discovered things that interested me that were different from my friends, such as: anime and Japanese/Korean Pop music. Upon entering high school the reasons why I wasn't black differed slightly. I was now not black because of: the way I dress, speaking properly, reading books outside of assignments, taking advance level classes and deciding to run cross country(which in America is a predominantly white sport though dominated by African runners!)  The thing that always irritated me the most was the majority of the remarks about my level of blackness were said to me by people of my own race and color. My struggle was that I was too "black" to be white but too "white" to be black.

Robert Griffin III: A Cornball Brother

One of the reasons I was sparked to write this was because, Robert Parker, a contributor to ESPN spoke about NFL star Robert Griffin III(RG3)'s level of blackness. His statement was that RG3 wasn't a "true brother" but rather a cornball brother because of a number of factors including but not limited to: his style, personality and his white fiancee.

Why Is Success Defined By The Color Of Your Skin?

One must wonder when does the line stop? When will the black community move away from who gets a black card and who doesn't. Why is success defined by the color of your skin? The fact that this was even brought up on a worldwide channel such as ESPN just shows that this level of idiocracy is still alive a prominent and keeping us as a race of people from growing together and showing support for one another. Instead we hail and praise people such as 17 year old rapper Chief Keef, who recently signed a multimillion contract and already has multiple run-ins with the law. Apparently this is the definition of being black!

Am i discrediting his work ethic or ability for him to get that contract, I am not. But it is saddening that this is what I have to do to be considered black.

I Can Only Be Myself

The great thing about this, is that I am okay and comfortable with who I am. Just like Robert Griffin III famous producer Pharrell Williams and Donald Glover, a black comedian and actor on the Community, I know myself.  I am a nerd, a brother, a friend, a grandson, a entrepreneur, a leader, and hopefully a role model to others who can relate.  This isn't a black thing or a white thing, or a yellow thing, or whatever color or race you are. This is a self image thing! Lets stop trying to place each other into a predefined box and let them be who they are.

If your like myself and have experienced being defined due to being different, lets talk and help show people that "I am different and don't try to change me." Shoot me an email, I'd love to hear your story.

SavySwap Is A Go!

So if you don't know I created a startup called SavySwap, which as it names says is based around swapping. I couldn't be more happier with my decision to take a leap of faith by leaving the world renowned, Howard University and go at this full time. The things I have experienced since starting this adventure have been amazing and invaluable. From connecting with some great people to getting wonderful feedback from friends, family, and even strangers, it's been a blessing.

So Where Are We Now

Since the summer, SavySwap has come from being just an idea to becoming a reality. This journey has not always been easy but if Frodo could travel to Middle Earth to return the ring, why can't I! Over the past few weeks SavySwap has been moving at full speed. First and foremost, we have officially become incorporated! Second, we have completely redesigned a new landing page which will roll out later this week, here's a sneak-peek at the new page.

Third, we are in the process of creating a beta mobile app for the iPhone. You can see some of the screenshots below:

What's Next?

So what's next? Well we will need your help bringing a complete app to you, the people! We are running a crowdfunding campaign in the next few weeks and your help would be greatly appreciated. You can expect some pretty dope perks and rewards for your contributions.

Now, we understand that not everyone will be able to contribute money and that is okay, but that doesn't mean you can't help us out and receive rewards too. Starting on December 1st you can head on over to the newly redesigned SavySwap page, and sign up for our email listing and enter for a chance to win a brand new iPhone 5, for FREE!

The rules are simple. Using the exclusive link you will receive upon signing up, get as many friends as possible to signup using your link. The person who brings in the most unique email users will win.

Stay Savy

Yes, I know savvy is normally spelled with two v's but we aren't looking to be normal. I would like to thank everyone who has given their support and warm wishes so far. This include my grandparents whose help, wisdom, and teachings throughout my childhood have helped make all this possible. To my parents who probably lost endless hours of sleep during my whirlwind college career until now, I thank you! And to all my friends and family who have shown support during this journey, I thank you too. Without you all SavySwap could not have gotten this far.

Make sure to check out SavySwap on Facebook and Twitter and remember the adventure is just beginning. Stay Savy my friends!

What Are You Thankful For

Thanksgiving is here! A time to be with your families, watch football, eat dry turkey and for everyone to put aside their differences and have a good time. Though I'm not with my family and friends this year, I am still very much thankful for everything they have done for me.

Take a moment to think about what your thankful for. Enjoy!

Two Types of People in This World: Coders and Non-Coders

For the past 12 hours I have been sitting hunched over my computer teaching myself the programming language, Ruby. I was so involved in this that I literally forgot to eat! Now for non-tech people, you probably think that this is crazy, and yes we are a tad bit crazy; but coding is probably one of the best rushes in the world! Having the ability to create something innovative, beautiful, and functionable makes the long hours worth it.

Take a look at the sites you visit daily, may it be Google, Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, etc. We don't take time to think about the complexity that goes behind building these sites, why? BECAUSE THEY FUNCTION SO WELL IT SEEMS NATURAL. But imagine the hundreds of thousands of lines of code that make up just your Twitter feed. Is your mind blown yet?

I'm no expert hacker or ninja coder, yet! But with only one day of learning Ruby, I was able to create a functional site with user login capabilities.

My point being is this, don't wait around and read about the next Facebook or Twitter being built. Take the same time you would spend trolling through your timeline and learn how to build these sites. I guarantee that within 10-20 years if you can't code you won't be able to get a good paying job. Just take a look around you and think about it.

PS- I have to give a shoutout to Mattan Griffel for an amazing intro to Ruby tutorial. I recommend everyone checks out his online class.

Working Together Today, For A Brighter Tomorrow

This is a random post but I feel this needs to be said. I've been seeing a lot of press lately of rappers, singers, athletes, etc., beefing online via Twitter over the littlest and most childish things with some cases ending in real world altercations. Speaking from the prospective of a young black male who is looking to create something that will make a difference in the world this upsets me.

It saddens me to see that we as a society are missing the purpose of working together and collaborating to create something bigger then us. Yes attaining money, fame, and status is always good but what is your impact on society.  Why must we publicly put each other down for the sake of what? To show you have more album sales, or you make more money, or you have more jewelry or fancier cars then the next person. Yes attaining money, fame, and status is great but what will your legacy be once you are gone. What ideals and values are you getting across to the people who aspire to be you.

The reason I see this as a problem is because in today's world, we the people are heavily influenced by what these stars do, say and endorse. If you do not believe this to be true, simply take a look at the drink Ciroc. Ciroc has been around since 2003, in 2007 Sean "Diddy" Combs begin to endorse the Vodka drink. Within eight months, sales increased over 100%. Since Diddy's endorsement until now overall sales have increased 500%. Anyone else see the connection. Look at any video that Diddy is in, that Rick Ross and his label Maybach Music Group produce, among other rappers. Is Ciroc necessarily better then any other Vodka? Maybe, maybe not, but the drink is primally brought because of who endorses it.

Imagine high profile artists, athletes, and performers collaborating instead of tearing each other down. And I don't mean to donate money when a disaster happens or to boost their public image, but to truly work on something innovative and unique. We all can't be rappers or actors or athletes but that does not mean we cannot be successful. The same tech tools these stars use to attack and defame each other are the same tools they could be touching the leaders of tomorrow how to build, create and master them.

To close, you may or may not agree with this post, but look at the world around us, influence is a major part of our society. If you want role models inspire to be like Tristan Walker, Michael Seibel, Garrett GeeKimberly Bryant, Ashton Kutcher, Daniel Brusilovksy. These are people who are making a difference, changing lives, and creating new opportunities for leaders of tomorrow. With technology it does not matter what race, gender, age, or creed you are, you can create anything you desire and achieve any goal you set for yourself.

What is Failure?

As I sit here writing this blog, I am thinking to myself what is failure? To me failure can be a number of things. Merriam-Webster defines failure as a state of inability to perform a normal function. To me failure is not completing something that you set out to do. Failure is not taking a step forward because you can't see the path in front of you. Failure is having the ability to make a difference in the world and not taking action.

I may not be famous, amazing or extremely talented but I refuse to let the fear of failing consume my life. Not everyday will be a success and not everything will go your way in life but I see all these aspects as a part of the journey. I would be lying to say that I don't get scared or nervous but that's life, right?

If you have had similar feelings or moments such as this in your life, feel free to drop a comment or shoot me an email. We are all in this game of life together, no matter what you are going after in life.

Don't Wait For It To Happen, Outsource It

During the past few months things with my current business venture has been taking off; from meeting new people to attracting the attention of potential investors. As a non-technical founder starting a tech company you could say I'm at a huge disadvantage. Don't get me wrong, I can code in html and css but for the idea I'm looking to bring to life my limited programming skills do not match up well. No reason to twiddle my thumbs when I can outsource.

Just Be You

If you don't already know, the entrepreneur I look up to the most is Garrett Gee, the founder of Scan. I continuously quote him in my post because GEE is the man! But in all seriousness; the thing that draws me to Gee is not only his creativity but his willingness and desire to create something innovative while staying true to himself.

The Investors Journey

The process of building a great and successful startup is a journey. There are moments of triumph and sorrow, however, the journey of securing funding from investors is a journey within itself. Gee mentioned in one of his speeches that when he initially approached investors he was putting on an act. Dressing up in fancy suits, attempting to sell the investors on the financial numbers instead of the vision and goals of the company. They saw right through his act and decided not move forward with the talks. The second time Gee was approached by investors he stayed true to himself and showed the investors: here is my vision, these are our goals, and what you see is what you get.

Staying True To Yourself

Investors are not only investing in your idea but you as a person as well as your team. My personal belief is that you should not conform to what you believe investors will want you to be, but rather be who you are. If they do not like you as a person then maybe the partnership is not meant to be from jump street.

I can't say I know all the right answers as I myself am still playing the investor field, but I can look at the lessons learned from those who I admire and respect and use it during my adventure.

PS. It is my hope to one day meet Garrett Gee.

Enjoying Small Victories

As entrepreneurs we all have a time in our minds when we believe that we have finally made it. For some, that time comes when their company is acquired by a larger company, for others it may be when reaching 10,000 users. For many that time comes upon receiving your first large investment by a venture capitalist or angel investor and being on the front of TechCrunch. Measuring success varies for each person and each company, but no matter the value you place on success, remember to enjoy the small victories.

Each mini goal you achieve is validation that you are on the road to great success. Recently my company SavySwap was featured on a site called AtThePool. You can check out the blog post here. This small victory is a great thing for us. We have created a connection with another startup and have gotten our name promoted as well.

The path to achieving your goals and dreams will be full of roadblocks but celebrating a small  victory will help build your confidence as you continue upon the path to success.

Social Networks

Social networks may be one of the greatest things ever created for a business. The impact that connecting with your users, fans, customers is unlimited. Think back just 4-5 years ago, Justin Beiber and Soulja Boy used social media to kick start their careers into overdrive. If done right social media can be your best friend, but what is the best way to go about it?

Do Not Advertise At Me

No one wants to be advertise at, we get enough of that in our daily lives. When looking to connect with users via social networks, try thinking outside of the box. Instead of constantly beating people over the head with your services and prices try what I call relationship marketing. Post funny memes and ask users to comment, add YouTube videos, generate questions that users can answers, ENGAGE WITH THE USERS!

Discount Double Check

If you believe that you don't have the time to constantly post things on your multiple social networks, theres an app for that. If your still in the early stages of your startup you don't have to hire someone . Applications such as HootSuite allow you to consolidate all of your social networks so posting on multiple platforms is as simple as ABC. You can pre-schedule your post for specific times or allow the system to post at the best time for the most views.

Do Not Take Things Personal

The beauty of the internet is the ability of freedom of speech. Users will openly speak their mind about your products and services. It is your job to respond in a cordial manner because the world is watching. One outburst online can cause a firestorm to rain down on your business. Remember, anything you post on the internet will remain somewhere in cyberspace. Screen shots and cached pages can trace the comments back to the source, so think before you post.

Big Things

Haven't been on here to update this as of lately due to working on some big things for my company SavySwap that will be unveiled in the upcoming weeks. I'm excited to tell all of you but I have to wait until things go through. I recently read this quote which has stuck with me. "If you're going to climb a mountain,  you've got to aim for the top. But don't forget to enjoy the scenery."

Stay Savy My Friends.

Being Proactive

Sometimes we get so caught up in dreaming big that we forget that Rome wasn't built in one day, it was built by being proactive.

Prioritize your Goals

Assigning yourself numerous small tasks to complete throughout the day is a great way to get things done. The first thing you should do is prioritize the most important things to do for the day. After determining the importance of your tasks go about making a to-do list.  Start out by setting 5-10 goals to do for the day. If you finish only six, that's okay. This shows gradual progress throughout the day and you know what is left to finish tomorrow.

Dwelling on Problems

A problem that a majority of us have is dwelling on problems that may arise as we complete our tasks. We experience hurdles and setbacks and spend extra time on a task when we should have moved on to the next one. If you go ahead and finish your remaining tasks, you'll have time at the end of the day to attack your problem with a cleared and focused mind.

Anticipate Your Needs

Don't be afraid to plan out your tasks days, weeks, or months in advance. If you know that you'll need to learn a new skill or prepare something that is a few weeks or months away don't hesitate to work on these things. By working on these tasks in advance you diminish the percentage for possible failings and have the opportunity to develop fallback plans as well.

Just Do It

Being proactive is a must when it comes to building anything. Do today what others won't, so tomorrow, you can do what others can't.

Negativity, Frustration, Moving Forward

In anything you attempt to do there will be those who do not believe you will succeed and will speak negatively about you or try to cast doubts in your mind. I have had similar instances where people have heard that I was leaving a prestigious university in Washington, DC to move to California to pursue my startup idea. They stated that I am too young, not experienced enough, or just flat out don't believe I'll make it. I use that negativity energy to help propel myself to continue to work and get things done.

Ways to Channel Negative Energy Into Positive Energy

The fastest and easiest way to remove negativity is to take a break from social networks. Social networks for the most part does not benefit us in anyway. Sure it allows us to connect to people who we would not usually talk to or to be updated instantly with the click of a refresh button. The negative is social networks is the first place we go to express our dislike, hate, and negative feelings to the world. Do not allow social networks to be your public journal.

Following the disconnect from social networks, begin to allocate 30 minutes a day to yourself. You may be busy but set aside 30 minutes to allow yourself time to meditate, exercise, or something that will take your mind off of the hustle and bustle of your daily life. These simple 30 minutes can allow you to release frustation that may have been building throughout the day.

Surround Yourself With Eagles

Someone great once told me that birds of a feather flock together. Whenever you are setting out to accomplish something great there will be people who don't believe in you. You need to remove this negativity from your life and surround yourself with people who have similar ideals and goals. Finding a group of eagles to soar with is better then running around with turkeys whom are forever confined to the ground. There are various entrepreneurship meetings or clubs in just about every city which can be found on sites such as Meetup

Always remember, "Celebrate your success and stand strong when adversity hits, for when the storm clouds come in, the eagles soar while the small birds take cover."

Have Fun

My new favorite video online has to be Gungham Style by the artist PSY. Though I have no idea what he says, the images, dancing, and scenarios allow me to enjoy the video.

Remember to take time out for yourself and have a little fun. Building a business can be stressful and frustrating at times but taking a step back from things can allow you to come back with a clear and focused mind. When in doubt, just do the "Invisible Horse Dance!"

The Power of A Team

Andrew Carnegie once said, "Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organizational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results." With the right team a simple idea can turn into a great one. The addition of team members brings new perspectives and ideas that you may not have thought of. Finding the right team is just as much apart of the journey as building the product for your startup.

Know Your Skills

Knowing what your good and bad at is key when picking a co-founder or future members of your team. If you are technically sound but know you are not the most social person or not the best public speaker or marketer then try to find a co-founder who excels in those areas. The same goes for non-technical founders. Delegating tasks to various team members also allows you to focus on what your best at!

If You Can't Find Them, Outsource

Finding the right members who meshes well with each other and are committed to the vision can take time but that doesn't mean you should stop building your startup. Handle the task that you know you can do effectively and outsource the rest. There are tons of companies and individuals who are willing and looking to create, build, produce anything and everything that you possibly want or need. Also leverage your network. Do not be afraid to ask for help, because you never know who a friend of a friend may be.

In the End

No team will be perfect but having a team there every step of the way makes the process that much more enjoyable. When you finally do reach your goals, you'll be able to celebrate and laugh about the highs and the lows.

Finding Your Billion Dollar Idea

We all have those moments where we say, "Man I wish someone would create this" or "This is a great idea, its probably worth a billion dollars," and you just very well may be right. The problem is that the majority of us will never pursue these great idea. Your idea could be the next Facebook or Amazon, or may be something small but just as useful like the pooper scooper or the toaster oven.

Jot It Down

Keep a journal handy, whether its on your phone or a physical notebook. When you get an idea, jot it down and revisit it later. Think to yourself, "What is a problem that I have? Is there an existing solution to my problem? If so, how can my idea make it better." Not every idea you think of will be a game changer and thats okay, but something in your book is. All you have to do is try it.

Sharing

There is an age old fear of people worrying about others stealing their idea upon sharing it with them. That notion is false. As Howard H. Aiken, an engineer for IBM once said, "Don't worry about people stealing an idea. If it's original, you will have to ram it down their throats." That's the truth! The only way for people to hear about your idea is to share it with them. Sharing allows you to gain feedback, meet potential investors, generate interest from users, and find team members to help you build the product. If your idea has holes, sharing it will allow you to figure out solutions, work on your pitch, and get a better understanding of your own project. Plus, for someone to actually steal your idea, that involves them having to create it, which generally no one is willing to do.

Keep In Mind

If you are looking to find a get rich fast idea, entrepreneurship is not for you. Instead, find something that you are passionate about. Something that you can see yourself dedicating every waking moment to and then go after it. Remember, Rome wasn't created in one night and neither was Facebook.

Groundbreaking Decision

As I sat in my journalism class during the fall 2011 semester at Howard University, I stared at the wall and asked myself, "Can I see myself doing this for the rest of my life?" I shrugged it off because as a junior who was in the middle of transferring to his fourth school I knew this was it. I was here to get my degree and hopefully begin my career as a budding tech journalist.

Why a tech journalist? Well technology is my passion, specifically smartphones and startups. I love researching and reading about every aspect of technology. My thought process was, the best way to get first hand information about the latest happenings in technology was to write about it, right?

Fast forward to February. I begin applying to internships left in right, from Universal to local news papers around the county. Email after email contained the famous words, "after reviewing your applications you are a talented applicant, however,".... I quickly deleted them. I finally heard back from an internship I was willing to take. It was a writing position for the Philadelphia Inquiry. Great! Here is my big break at a reputable newspaper. I go through the interview process, send in sample writing material, add my references and a few days later, I got it! 12 weeks, 40 hours a week and no pay, hmm this can't be what I want to do all summer, is it?

Throughout the whole year at Howard, I was keeping track of startups around the world receiving millions of dollars in funding and asking myself man why can't that be me. Normal people similar to me creating amazing things that I use everyday like Instagram or Twitter or Facebook, etc. I was literally fighting back the urge to take a chance and pursue the ideas that I continuously wrote down in my journal.

Summer break comes and I am all set to start at the Philadelphia Inquiry. One late night as I was surfing the internet looking for a reliable QR code reader, I stumbled onto an app called Scan. I had never heard of it before so I begin to do a little research, and ended up on the blog of Garrett Gee, the founder. Hunched over my computer at 4am I went through ever single one of his post, soaking in the knowledge and tips he provided. Garrett helped me realize two things: 1. If I don't decide to pursue my ideas then that's all they'll ever be is ideas, and 2. I needed to learn how to code.

That very night I throw myself into codecademy to learn the basics. Upon closing my computer at around 1pm the next day and finally heading to bed, I knew what I was going to do. School would have to wait, the Philadelphia Inquiry would have to wait,  I was going to begin my own startup.
