During the past few months things with my current business venture has been taking off; from meeting new people to attracting the attention of potential investors. As a non-technical founder starting a tech company you could say I'm at a huge disadvantage. Don't get me wrong, I can code in html and css but for the idea I'm looking to bring to life my limited programming skills do not match up well. No reason to twiddle my thumbs when I can outsource.
Recreating the Vision
The hardest part so far that I have experienced since deciding to outsource the project has been conveying the vision that I have in my mind. Every aspect of the project I have pictured over and over again in my mind, I even dream about it sometimes lol. I have found that constant and direct communication are key when outsourcing. DO NOT hesitate to let them know that visually that's not what you were looking for etc,. You will end up wasting money, time, and energy.
Picking the Right Company
Picking the right company is something that should not be rushed. There are hundreds of thousands of companies who are available for hire, but who is the best one for your job. Check out sites such as ELance and ODesk to find the right company for you. Make sure you browse through their reviews and ratings to see what others are saying about them. Another thing you can do is look at their job history to see if they have completed similar jobs before. Also conducting an initial interview to get a feel for various companies cost you no money and is highly encouraged.
Setting A Budget
Determining the budget for your project is key. Outsourcing projects can sometimes run into problems depending on the level of difficulty of the project and if workers are being paid on a fixed or hourly scale. Let potential companies know that you have a strict budget and will not stray too far from it. Many companies will work with you to deliver on your budget and establish milestones to make sure you are satisfied with the work before releasing payment.
Remember just because you aren't technical does not mean you can't bring your vision to life. Outsourcing allows you to save money as well as time, so you put your focus towards tasks you are strong at. As Henry David Thoreau said, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined." Lets all push towards achieving our dreams and making a difference in the world.
